Segel
9th Grade Jewish Teen Travel Program
Perhaps CYJ’s most thrilling offer of all, campers entering the 9th grade get to go on our incredible travel program: Segel!! After spending the first week at Camp, our campers take off on a bus across the Southwest! They learn about leadership, teamwork, and finding themselves, all while having the time of their lives and forming unforgettable friendships.
(Our Segel program is the FIRST program to fill up and accumulate waiting lists each year, so apply today!)
What’s the program like?
During Segel, campers will lead camp programs and create special projects to leave their mark on CYJ. One highlight of the program is when the Segel campers plan, create, and run Erev Kef, which is essentially a large fair for all of camp. This is a great opportunity for the Segel campers to show their creativity and leadership and to provide a memorable night for our entire camp. Whether it’s structured events such as Erev Kef or playing gaga at chofesh, our camp community always looks up to our Segel campers and they never seem to disappoint.
After they spend their first week at camp, the Segel campers load up the bus and head out West! They’ll climb the highest peak in Texas, jump off dunes at White Sands National Park, have a serene Shabbat near Zion National Park, and so much more. Through this, the campers also become more independent than ever before by camping out throughout the trip and cooking food for themselves. The Segel trip is something all of our campers look forward to and is a special trip our Segel campers will never forget.
Where do they stay?
Although they’ll occasionally stay in hotels, Segel campers will spend most nights camping outdoors. They’ll learn how to pitch a tent and practice building their tent prior to leaving on the trip. Campers may feel hesitant about camping outside, but once the trip begins, it becomes second nature and is a special, unique experience that they really enjoy.
What’s the bus like?
Campers will be riding on a 55 passenger charter bus. The bus will have bathrooms, video monitors, comfortable seats, and will be driven by our legendary bus driver, Tommy, who has been our driver on every Segel trip ever!
