These past few months, I have had the incredible opportunity to participate in Year Course, a unique experience combining traveling, volunteering, and immersive learning throughout Israel. Coming into Israel after the events of October 7th, I wasn’t sure how my experience might differ from those of past Year Course alumni. After being here for four months, I can confidently state that this semester has been enlightening and life-changing. Despite the many challenges the country has faced in the past year, I have felt an overwhelming sense of love and warmth, while learning more about how the tragedy of October 7th still influences day-to-day life in Israel.
Our weekly activities vary from classes focusing on Zionism and leadership to traveling to different cities and learning about the culture and importance of the state of Israel. I’ve had the opportunity to participate in various activities such as volunteering to make food for soldiers and going on desert hikes. Year Course has not only allowed me to grow personally but also helped me gain a deeper understanding of Israel and its people.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Year Course has been connecting with Jews from all over the world. Living in a room with three girls from different parts of the world, Israel, Texas, and Georgia, has been a powerful reminder of the incredible diversity within the Jewish community. It’s been amazing to hear each person’s story, learn from their experiences, and share throughout this journey together. I have made friends that I will have for life in such a short time.
One of my absolute favorite experiences so far has been this past weekend’s Road Trip with the Rabbi. We traveled to Rabbi Adam’s community, Kiryat Gat, for Shabbat, where we stayed with host families in his neighborhood. We all spent time together having Shabbat meals, playing games, and further getting to know one another. It was a beautiful reminder of the strength of community, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the sense of connection that can be fostered in Israel, even in challenging times. I can not wait to see what the rest of the year holds and I look forward to learning more about Israel and deepening my connection to those around me.
